Processing at the MillOUR PROCESS

We are a full service mill, able to process alpaca, wool, llama, mohair, etc.  Successful roving and yarn is a PARTNERSHIP we enter into with you.  Here are helpful tips for you to consider prior to sending your valuable fiber to us.

Cleanliness
  • Please skirt your fiber to remove as much vegetable matter as possible.
  • Remove 2nd cuts
  • Remove "belly fiber"

Strength

  • Fiber must be strong to withstand processing
  • Ideal staple length is 3 to 6 inches

Uniformity of Fiber

  • Mixed fiber lengths will yield a less smooth yarn

Color

  • If a fleece is multi-colored, please consider your needs as far as a heathered yard or one color.
  • Skirt unwanted colored fiber out if so desired.

Consideration for Finished Product

  • Weight of your yarn (lace, sport, worsted, bulky)

Plys

  • Lopi
  • Single Spun
  • 2 ply
  • 3 ply
  • 4 ply

Two ply yarn tends to be flat and three ply yarn is round.

Blending

  • Blending fibers include merino, mohair, and silk
  • What percentage of blending fiber to use (We love an 80% alpaca / 20% merino for example)

 Yardage Per Skein

  • We custom skein so how many yards per skein would you like?
